Malcolm held degrees from the universities of Wales and East London and was awarded the first ever Law PhD from Middlesex University. After completing his doctorate, Malcolm joined Middlesex from the corporate world, as a Lecturer in Law in the Business School in October 1996. He rose swiftly through the ranks and became a Professor of Labour Law in 2004 having gained an international reputation for research and writing about discrimination and the law. He held Visiting Professor positions at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, the Thomas Jefferson Law School in San Diego and the University of Bergamo.
Malcolm was always fascinated by disability issues and, as he used to say, the older he got the more interested he became in age discrimination! However, he also wrote on a range of other labour law topics. In addition to all of the articles he wrote, Malcolm authored 8 books and edited 5 more. Indeed, Google Scholar shows that his publications have been cited over 1300 times.
Malcolm was a very private person who put his family before everything else. Most of his colleagues at Middlesex were unaware of the struggles he faced over his last three years. However, everyone recognised the wonderful example he set when he changed career and rose to the top of the academic ladder.
Malcolm will be sorely missed by all that knew him and fondly remembered by the students he taught and supervised.
Professor Malcolm Sargeant sadly passed away in November 2020 after bravely fighting pancreatic cancer for three years.
